But we do have an eCommerce talent problem in Australia.
Nathan first realised this two years ago when he started his eCommerce strategy consultancy, 12HIGH. He would often get called in for an initial chat with CEO’s and founders who felt that their technology or marketing needed a major overhaul. He’d leave with a talent brief. Before the first whiteboard marker was picked up, it was usually obvious that it wasn’t a technology or marketing problem that needed immediate priority – it was people. Whether this was getting the right capabilities in, the right structure for teams or a the right processes in place. Most of the time, it wasn’t marketing or technology holding these eCommerce businesses back, it was their people set up.
At the same time, Emily was helping SAAS, marketing and technology businesses attract the best talent from all over Australia. Most of the time, there were natural industry and skill fits which gave confidence in the made the match-making process. The area where there was often a blur was eCommerce. New roles in eCom often straddled a unique fit between marketing, technology and retail operations. They didn’t always fit into one bucket. But what was happening was that eCommerce talent was falling to recruiters on the edges of eCom who didn’t truly understand the intricacies of the industry. And hey, we all know retailers are a special breed.
Online shopping booms. Emerging online businesses boom and hang on to keep up. Traditional retail businesses ramp up their eCommerce capabilities at a pace we have not seen before. The talent market is instantly upended with mass redundancies, restructured teams and new ways of working. Finding and nurturing great eCommerce talent has never been so important.
