How to stand out from the crowd in your eCommerce job search

Getting the job of your dreams can be time-consuming. Going through the wishlist of the companies you’d like to work for, spending time updating your CV and cover letter, and doing it over and over again can all be very exhausting. But it doesn’t have to be! With the right approach, you could land a dream role on the first try.

Every time you apply for a role you have the chance to be a star by catching the employers’ attention. Skills aren’t always the winning touch. Your unique personality is definitely an attractive feature in landing that new role.

Let’s be real, job hunting is tough. So I thought I’d share some tips with you of things I’ve seen and heard in the industry that really grabbed our attention and helped to secure roles. If you haven’t updated your CV in a while, check out these tips on getting it sorted here.

Here are three tips to help you stand out from the crowd when applying for that new eCommerce role:

  1. A video introduction of yourself

This is an interesting one, and perhaps not for everyone. It’s certainly a great way to get noticed, get out of your comfort zone and do something different to everyone else. We have seen a lot of quick video introductions lately and they always get viewed and certainly noticed!

This is a great opportunity to summarise your career, what you are looking for and how you can help the business achieve their goals. It doesn’t have to be long, the shorter the better, frankly, no one has time to watch a 30 min doco on a potential candidate. Not only will you give the recruiter or hiring manager a quick summary, but it will also showcase your personality.

  1. Research the company and add a personalised cover letter

Research the company you’d like to join, and know the traits that impress them. Add to your cover letter some of the core values that would match the company’s values or mission. You can find out more about them by reading their blogs, newsletters, job postings, linkedin page and news.

Feel free to even call out some of the achievements that impressed you about the company and give a quick congratulations. And most importantly find out what their goals might be and add a few lines on how your skills or experience can help them get there.

  1. Get noticed before applying

Get active in the industry community of your preferred company, it could be on LinkedIn by engaging in discussions, community groups, company updates. You might want to post about similar subjects, news, values, and missions that would be of interest to the business too.

You can even take it one step further and join networking events, meet people through industry events and conferences. You never know what new connections can bring! By surrounding yourself with the right people you are also one step closer to feeling as if you are working with that company already. Bring on the good vibes and activate the manifestations!

When you’re considering applying for that next role. Make sure that it’s a role or company that you are passionate about. Rather than applying endlessly to hundreds of job ads, narrow down your search and choose the opportunities that align with your own goals and passions. If you focus on fewer opportunities, you can really take the time to research & plan your application for that role. Give the video introduction and personalised cover letter a go. And remember, first impressions last! Good luck!
